Southport Lyric Singers

Diamond Jubilee

In 2014 we were proud to be celebrating 60 years of presenting concerts in support of local clubs and charities.

We performed our special Jubilee Concert at Christ Church, Lord Street
on Saturday 14th June. At this Concert we were supporting the Southport & District Branch of Parkinson’s UK

The programme was very varied and included items that were popular in 1954 when the Choir was first formed. There were several solos by Choir members and a monologue by our resident poet, Audrey Wright. The performance was conducted by Edna Woodward, accompanied by Margaret Prew and Marjorie Jewell and the comperes were Dorothy H Hughes and Helen Bennett. Tea and coffee was served in the interval and there was also a display of photos from the Choir Archive. The Mayor of Sefton, Councillor Kevin Cluskey attended

The Lyrics have always prided themselves on supporting local charities so, although admission to this special concert was free, the retiring collection in aid of the Southport and Formby Branch of Parkinson’s UK, raised over £1,200.

The Champion Newspaper sent a photographer and reporter. Jenny Robson wrote "This was a 'nostalgic, feel-good evening'"

Thanksgiving Service, 15th June, 6:00 p.m. at Lord Street West Church

On Sunday 15th June, at 6:00 p.m. we held a Thanksgiving Service at Lord Street West Church, which is where we practise. The Service was led by Ken Hooton and took the form of a Songs of Praise with hymns chosen by the members of the Lyrics who also performed The Lord is My Shepherd (Vicar of Dibley version) and 'Clare Benediction' (Rutter).

This was followed by a buffet meal in the Masonic Hall, Duke Street.
